RESUME


MODULE INTRO:

The purpose of the résumé is to pitch and reveal yourself to the employer, broadly showcasing your experience and expertise. The objective of your résumé is to land a call or interview with the employer. Do not worry about sharing everything, as you'll have your chance in person. Think of this document as a quick professional advertisement. Grab their attention and get them wanting more.


  • Top Third: The most important info is in the top third

  • Ordering: Sections are prioritized, with experience first

  • Reverse-Chronological: Most recent material is first

  • Bullet Prioritization: Best bullets are first

  • Single Page: Doc is just one page, longer if 10+ years

  • Skimmability: Roles and companies stand out

  • Bullet Shape: Bullets are not dashes or odd shapes

  • Bullet Numbering: Quantity of bullets are consistent

  • Bullet Quality: Bullets are not about quantity, but quality

  • Basic Fonts: Typography is professional and consistent

  • Limited Rich Text: Bolding, italics, etc. are used sparingly

  • Coloring: If used, it is done so sparingly

  • No Orphans Lines: No single words should be alone on their own line

  • No White Space: No gaping, open white spaces

  • No Boxes: No tables, charts, or graphics

  • No Header: No text in the doc's header

  • No Footer: No text in the doc's footer

  • No Photo: No headshot

  • Formatting: All styling is consistent (hyphen spacing, etc.)

  • Address: City is listed, but not a physical address

  • Email: Included and ideally not .edu or @gmail

  • Phone: Cell phone number is listed

  • LinkedIn: Unique profile URL is included and hyperlinked

  • Social: Relevant social accounts are hyperlinked

  • Live Links: All hyperlinks are live and direct correctly

  • Focus: At a glance, expertise is clear

  • No Objective: No mission, it's the get the job, duh

  • Summary Line: Single descriptive title is included

  • Balance: Mix of work description and achievement

  • Keywords: Relevant keywords are included for scanners

  • No References: No names listed or "available upon request"

  • Memorization: You can recall everything listed

  • Work: Tasks completed, projects apart of

  • Knowledge: Skills learned, insights obtained

  • Results: Quantified accomplishments, impact of effort

  • Achievements: Wow-worthy feats, unique to you

  • Trait Transferability: Content can be applied across roles

  • Trait Multitasking: Content can be interpreted as simultaneous

  • No Controversy: No political, religious, trade secrets, etc.

  • No Fluff: No irrelevant or excessive material

  • Graduation: Exclude graduation year, avoid bias

  • Academic Emphasis: A concentration is included

  • GPA: If included, it is above a +3.50

  • Classes: If lack of work experience, courses are listed

  • High School: Nothing listed, okay if in college

  • Expertise: Relevant keywords are included

  • Skills: Tools and software expertise is listed

  • No Microsoft Word: Do not include the obvious

  • Languages: Languages included are relevant

  • Interests: If appropriate, ice-breaking passions are listed

  • Differentiator: There are elements that make you unique

  • Intransitive Verbs: Each bullet begins with an action verb

  • Strong Verbs: Each verb is powerful and aggressive

  • Correct Tense: Past experiences in past tense, etc.

  • No Negatives: Do not include "Not", "Didn't", etc.

  • No Subjectivity: No phrasing is up for interpretation

  • No Periods: No "." at the end of bullets

  • No First Person: No "I's" or "My's"

  • No Excessive Punctuation: Avoid multiple commas per line

  • No Typos: No grammatical errors or spelling mistakes

  • Read Aloud: The doc is coherent and understandable

  • Format: File saved and shared as a .pdf, not .doc

  • Consistency: When exported, doc appears unchanged

  • Style: Layout and design is similar to your letter

  • Naming: File is titled First-Last-Resume.pdf
